COPPA and FERPA Compliance

Welcome to Knowlej! We care about your privacy and are committed to protecting the personal information of students, parents, and schools. This page explains what data we collect, how we use it, and the rights you have under U.S. laws like COPPA (Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act for children under 13) and FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act for students in schools).

What Information We Collect
- Student names, schools, school-assigned email addresses, grade, and class name or number
- Attendance and challenge participation data
- Parent email addresses (for verification and consent)
- Student activity logs (challenge progress, redemptions)
- Survey responses
- Device/browser type (for improving app experience)

How We Use This Information
We only collect what’s necessary to:
- Track challenge and attendance progress
- Deliver rewards
- Improve the student experience
- Comply with school data requirements

We do not sell or share student data with advertisers or third parties.

COPPA Compliance (Children Under 13)
If your child is under 13, we require verifiable parental consent before collecting any personal data.

We use school-provided parent emails to:
- Send consent requests
- Provide visibility into your child’s data
- Enable the option to delete data or revoke access at any time

School Exception Clause (COPPA): If the platform is being used by students in an educational context, schools may act as the agent for parents in providing consent, provided they are using the platform for educational purposes only and are fully informed of the data being collected.

FERPA Compliance (Student Records)
We follow FERPA guidelines by:
- Only collecting data from students via schools with proper permissions
- Allowing schools and parents to view or request deletion of student data
- Restricting data access based on user roles (student, parent, school admin)
- Encrypting all student data in transit and at rest

Annual FERPA Notification:
We provide annual notification to schools and families regarding their rights under FERPA, including the right to inspect and review education records, request corrections, and control certain disclosures of personal information.

Your Rights:
Parents and Students Have the Right To:
- Request access to personal/student data
- Correct inaccurate information
- Request deletion of personal data
- Revoke consent at any time

Rights transfer to the student upon turning 18 or entering post-secondary education, as required by FERPA.

We will not disclose personal data unless:

- Aggregated or de-identified data is shared for educational research or performance reporting

Data Security
We protect your data using:
- End-to-end encryption
- Access control by role
- Regular system audits and backups

Data Retention & Deletion
- Active student data is stored only while they are enrolled.
- Inactive accounts are anonymized or deleted after 12 months.
